The Artist Profile

The Artist Profile is an essay that explores the life of an influential photographer who has a significant body of work. They may be living or deceased.

A successful artist profile is one that covers the life of the artist; your reasons for exploring the artist; a short critique of their work; a few samples of the artist’s photography; and a source page, or bibliography, clearly listing where you obtained your source materials.

It must include:

3-to-5 double-spaced, 12-point font, typewritten pages, with sample photos and bibliography..
Photos copied from a book, magazine, portfolio or Web site that reflects the unique qualities of the artist you are exploring. Save images that you love, hate, or provoke your curiosity. Write about why the artist’s work captured your attention.
Personal insights about what you’ve learned from studying the artist
A sample of the photographer’s work that give his, or her, signature images. They should NOT be ripped from library materials or books. Even if a color image must be copied and thereby transformed into a black and white image, it will help me appreciate the composition and thinking of the artist/documentarian.
A bibliography of your work. Show me where you got your information from: book, magazine, website.
Remember that much of what we know about the world is based on images we see in newspapers, magazines, Web sites, books, television and movies. These sources get their visual vocabulary from photographic masters who created a lexicon of graphic storytelling long before the World Wide Web and television became common tools for communications.

Remember: Choose artistic masters that excite you and can teach you something that you’ve never known about or maybe were curious but never explored in depth. Choose a subjebcqct that YOU CARE ABOUT.
