• As background information, you may want to consult a working definition of “cultural hegemony” or “marginalization.” Use Gale Virtual Reference Library sources in the college library.
• You must quote from and discuss the work of literature you have chosen. Please use literary terms and processes of analysis appropriate to the genre of the literary work that you choose.
• You must consult at least one outside source suggested by the instructor in your Canvas module to deepen your understanding of the work of literature about which you are writing. Please be wary of outside sources that do not meet with the academic standards used all through this course.

• Consider the speaker or the narrator’s perspective on the culture that dominates a minority (or minorities).

• Research any current or historical events referenced in the literature or that strike you as an implied reference, using college database resources only.

• Please avoid references to your own experiences in the literary analysis section of this assignment “The Essay”.

Remember that characters exist in a world of their own. However, if the literature reflects an historical event, a cultural practice, or a belief system, you may apply historical facts or expert opinions to the world of the literature. If the work of literature was closely informed by the author’s life, you may incorporate relevant biographical information.

The essay must be between 750 – 800 words in length, excluding the list of Works Cited. It must be thesis-driven, which means that the thesis makes a claim about cultural domination (or hegemony or acculturation) and its effects as conveyed in the story or poem.

Remember that writers use literary devices, strategies, structures, and tools to create a particular impression for readers. Writers make suggestions about life and life experiences through the creation of characters and the development of images and ideas that are presented in lyric or prose works. To make a claim about a writer’s observations, bring evidence about what the writer chooses to do and say in their work instead of what you may think or feel about the subject of their art.

You should use literary terms and strategies of analysis that you practiced throughout the semester to deepen your own understanding of the literary work. You must quote and cite the primary text and at least one additional source, recommended by your instructor, or chosen by yourself (always recalling what sources are college-level and authoritative; database articles are preferred; if you want to use sources from the open web, it would be wise to check them with a librarian or with the instructor to be sure that they are legitimate and appropriate for this assignment). Present your essay in MLA-style, both in layout and in source documentation.

The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate that you can
a. identify and write in response to elements of the rhetorical situation: audience, purpose, and occasion,
b. employ various thinking strategies to develop well-reasoned judgments,
c. evaluate sources of information for accuracy, relevance, and reliability,
