I choose to offer the example of my divisional manager of my company. The company was a major player in the automotive industry.

Communication was the key to success for this person because a huge set of people used to work under him. Not all of them reported to him directly but since overall he was a divisional manager, almost 500 people used to report under him. At the functional levels, all the targets used to be very stretched. To achieve them required a collaboration and cooperation among different functions because the resources were limited. The divisional manager’s communicational efforts and his direct or indirect (down the line through the functional heads) communication were crucial in this regard. The communication skill of him was also important because he was the channels for the mid-level managers like us to receive the ideas and directions of the top management which reflected the strategy of our firm.

During the recession, one of our company’s tactics was to go for cost reduction initiatives. The chairman and the directors told us, at the annual convention, about such direction. But we were not clear as to how to operationalize the thing in our daily work. Our divisional manager took this forward by formulating a written communication where he extended the top management throughs and encouraged us to pursue a ‘one-gram-one-component’ campaign. The content of the written memo was clearly depicting that we need to find the opportunity of reducing one gram weight from every type of component that we produce. The written memo even represented a broad plan of the entire projects. This made the idea of cost reduction more clear down the line.

It was not possible for him to sustain as a divisional manager if he didn’t have proper written or verbal communication skill simply because he needed to deal with a large set of people both inside and outside of the division he led. On one side, he was responsible for attaining all the objectives and targets of the divisional after getting help from all the layers of hierarchy and at the same time he was supposed to liaison a lot with the other divisions for a smoother workflow. So, to me, communication skill was the real crucial component of his duty and it was the main secret behind his success.
