Employee Cell Phone Policy has become a vital part of the organization’s policies. Several companies have mentioned their guidelines for using cell phone in the office/working hours. Cell phones might prove to be useful if they are used for business purposes. On the other, these may cause harm if used excessively by an employee. There are various disadvantages of using cell phone in workplace as these distract an employee from work, disturbs other colleagues and these may cause security issues for company. Companies are taking strict actions against the employees if their productivity is decreasing because of the use of cell phones in office hours.
According to a Market Research Survey, people were asked about the number of mobile phones they use. They responded between 0-5 including personal and business phones. The age-group between 15-24, uses one mobile phone, whereas, age-group between 25-35 uses 2 mobile phones. Next question which was asked to them is if they keep their phones switched on all the times. 10% of people of age between 15-44 keeps it on and 40% of people of age group over 44 keep it switched off at times. Then, they were asked if they switch it off while working in office hours as well. 75% people said that they switch off their phone only while sleeping. 5% switch it off in office hours sometimes such as if they are in a meeting etc.
A survey was also done by ‘Careerbuilder’ at over 3,031 employees. Out of 5, only 1 employer thinks that employees are productive fewer than 5 hours a day. When they were asked about the reason for that, they blamed mobile phones of the employees for that. 66% employees said that they use mobiles several times a day while working, but 82% of them keep their mobile phones within eye contact. The survey concluded high cost of low productivity. As per the emplyers, with usage of mobile phones, employees compromise with the productivity of their work. The survey also shows that some of the companies tried to impose control on low productivity issues by banning certain internet sites, usage of mobile phones at work, etc.
