Answered Essay: In his book Crime and Everyday Life, Marcus Felson (2002) expands

Due today at 4:00pm

In his book Crime and Everyday Life, Marcus Felson (2002) expands on “routine activity theory” as an explanation for why crime occurs. According to this theory, crime happens when three elements come together: (a) a motivated offender, (b) an attractive victim, and (c) absence of capable guardians. Select one property crime and one violent crime. Apply routine activity theory to explain examples of each. Are you using theory in an inductive or deductive way?

Expert Answer

Routine activity theory states that a crime occurs when the following three elements come together in any given space and time:

1. an accessible target

2. the absence of capable guardians that could intervene

3. the presence of a motivated offender,

Property Crime: An unlocked car is stolen from n open parking area

Relating to routine activity theory:

1) Accessible Traget: Car is unlocked and is an accessible target for the offender

2) Absence of Guardian: Guardian here can be Car owner, a Police Patrol or a CCTV camera. Since the guradian is absent we have 2nd condition in place too.

3) Motivated Offender: The Theory states the offender will get motivated once the first 2 situations are met.

This is a Inductive way, wherein we have taken a specific example and related it to a general theory.

Voilent Crime: Sexual Harassment of a women in a secluded place by a group of people

1) Accessible Traget: Girl is alone in a secluded area

2) Absence of Guardian: Guardian here can be, Friends, neighbour, a Police Patrol or a CCTV camera. Since the guradian is absent we have 2nd condition in place too.

3) Motivated Offender: The Theory states the offender will get motivated once the first 2 situations are met.

This is a Inductive way, wherein we have taken a specific example and related it to a general theory.
