Ranking: This method is mainly used in order to determine the performance of the employees on sales level and it really helps in differentiating the employees depending upon the best to worst and higher performer to low performer division. This method is more suitable for the laborer or clerical employees.

Advantages

  1. This can be used to motivate the low ranked employees to perform better.
  2. It can be implemented for the development purpose. The employees will be able to compare themselves with the other workers and adjust their performance accordingly.

The managers can decide on the promotion and laying off decisions.

  1. It can result in counterproductive competition among the manpower.
  2. This is best suited for smaller firms.
  3. This method results in high turnover rates and lower morale of the employees.

Critical Incident

This method is used for clerical, sales, employees. With the help of this method, the manager can record the positive and negative performance of the employees. This is mainly used for the clerical, sales employees.
